Und wir stellen sie auf eine Bühne im Marie-Antoinette, unter der S-Bahn-Trasse an den BVG-Towern in Berlin-Mitte, am Donnerstag, den 14. Juni.

Tera Melos aus Sacramento gelten inzwischen als Neuerfinder des Math-Rocks. Aus den Ideen, die sie in einem Song verbraten, würden andere Bands ganze Alben machen. Irgendwie scheint den Jungs um Wahnsinnsgitarrist Nick Reinhart immer noch etwas einzufallen. (Hört unbedingt auch mal bygones mit Hella-Drummer Zach Hill!) Auf ihrem aktuellen Album Patagonian Rats (2010 Sargent House) stellen sie einmal mehr unter Beweis, dass sie den Gerne-Ikonen Faraquet oder Don Caballero (um nur zwei zu nennen) in nichts nachstehen und inzwischen ihren eigenen, verrückten und typischen Sound pflegen.

Bei Joie de Vivre geht es wesentlich weniger ruppig zu. Zumindest lassen sie sich tempomässig nicht aus der Reserve locken. Songs wie auf The North End (2010 Count Your Lucky Stars) haben viele Indie-Post-HC-(Emo?)-Bands Mitte der 90er bis um die Jahrtausendwende gemacht (The Gloria Record, American Football, Texas Is The Reason). Das ist heute nicht mehr sonderlich spektakulär, aber die Band aus Rockfort, Illinois macht das trotzdem ziemlich gut. Ab und zu auch mit Trompete. Punknews.org hat letztes Jahr April zwar das Ende der Band verkündet, warum sie trotzdem noch mal auf Tour kommen, fragen wir sie am 14. Juni.

Brooklyn based Will Stratton is currently on tour in Europe with Paleo from Chicago. They might pass your area, too!

Es ist doch immer wieder schön überrascht zu werden. Und während ich meine Oma mit einem Strauss bunter Blumen überraschen kann, schafft es mein Kollege Tom mit einer herrlichen Musikempfehlung: Death Grips.

Das Trio aus Sacramento macht Hiphop, legt diesen allerdings sehr experimentell, düster und streckenweise ziemlich aggressiv aus. Ähnlichkeiten zu Odd Future sind durchaus vorhanden. Im Gegensatz zu Tyler, The Creator verzichtet MC Ride (Stefan Burnett) jedoch auf homophobe Hasstiraden. Er erzählt viel lieber über Feuer, Vergänglichkeit und Tod. Selbst für Englisch-Muttersprachler ist diese unheilvolle Gedankenwelt, nicht so einfach nachzuvollziehen.

Was ist denn jetzt so überraschend an Death Grips? Kurz: alles.

Exmilitary, ihr erstes Album (eigentlich Mixtape) beginnt mit einem Ausschnitt aus einem Interview mit Serienkiller Charles Manson. „Beware“ klingt wie eine Kampfansage. „Wir sind Death Grips und kriegen euch alle!“. Die Songs sind vielseitig und originell produziert, und weil Zach Hill (siehe: Hella, Bygones, …) ein Teil des Produktionstems ist, blitzt hier und da sein wahnsinnig wildes Schlagzeugspiel auf.

Musikalisch könnte dem, was MC Ride eher rauszubrüllen („It goes, it goes, it goes, it goes … Guillotine!“) als zu rappen pflegt, nicht besser Rechnung getragen werden. Zach Hill und sein Kollege Andy Morin bauen intensive Beats, finden die richtigen Samples, verwenden abgefahrene Synthesizersounds und haben das Gefühl für Dynamik und Tempo, um dem dunklen Szenario einen passenden Soundtrack zu verleihen. Dabei gehen sie gut dosiert zu Werke, denn mit den wütenden Raps wollen sie’s wohl lieber nicht aufnehmen. Lieber mitlesen. Alle Lyrics von Exmilitary stehen auf der Homepage von Death Grips. Und wie selbstverständlich könnt ihr euch dort auch das ganze Mixtape runterladen.

Ihr neues Album The Money Story kommt in ungefähr zwei Wochen raus. Drei Stücke dürft ihr schon ausprobieren, darunter das eingängige “Get Got”. Es war meine erste Berührung mit Death Grips. Sie war extrem überraschend.

Today is the day! Åalborg in Denmark is the first stop. Paleo and Will Stratton are gonna tour together through almost entire Europe for the next two months. That’s pretty exciting, regarding the fact that the both of them are barely known on the Continent and the UK. However, this will change from now. We’ve got 36 shows confirmed so for. There are a few more to come. We’re still working on filling some gaps along the way.

Google maps says the north-south stretch of the tour is 2300 kilometers (Åalborg-Barcelona). The east-west stretch is 1900 km (Vienna-Bordeaux)!

Thanks so much to all the nice folks we talked to in the past months, who shared their contacts, bore our perpetual inquiries or even do shows for Will and David, provide food and drinks, and accommodate them. This is just awesome! The tour is only possible because of you! Special thanks goes to Rafael, Matthieu and Sean in France, who helped hugely, and without whom we’d have written the French leg off.

Sean also puts out Will’s new album Post-Empire on his label Talitres in Bordeaux. David’s  Fruit of the Spirit is gonna drop on May 11th through Devil Duck Records in Hamburg. That makes us really happy!

Mann! Ich bin immer noch pappesatt, dass ich letzten Sonntag Mount Eerie verpasst habe. Der sollte vor Earth im Festsaal spielen. Man kann sich in Berlin auf stage times einfach nicht verlassen. Hab mir schon so oft die Beine in den Bauch gestanden, auch unter der Woche, bis es endlich losging. Am Sonntag war ich kurz vor neun da. Ich wollte noch schnell am Kotti einen Döner essen und mich während dessen aus dem Saal von einer Freundin via whatsapp über die Bühnenbewegungen auf dem Laufenden halten lassen. Als mir der Döner über die Theke gereicht wurde, kam die erste Nachricht: Mount Eerie spielen gerade letzten Song. Ich: Scheisse. Und noch vorm ersten Mal abbeissen: Mount Eerie gehen von der Bühne. Keine Zugabe.

Das fetzt doch nicht! So was muss einfach besser kommuniziert werden. Wie angepisst ich gewesen wäre, hätte ich gleich Eintritt bezahlt und Mount Eerie trotzdem nicht gesehen.

Im April wird alles besser. Zu Shows im Gretchen könnt ihr gar nicht zu spät kommen. Die fangen immer erst urst spät an. Falls ihr schon mal da ward, wisst ihr was ich meine.

Shigeto würde dort gut hinpassen, wo doch Artverwandte wie Samiyam, Teebs und Shlohmo zuletzt im Gretchen gespielt haben. Allerdings ist der Sound dort so unglaublich mies, dass es in der Berghain-Kantine am 24. April nur besser werden kann. Shigeto, eigentlich Zach Saginaw (keene Ahnung, wie man das english ausspricht) ist ein Musiker und Produzent, den ich nicht genug abfeiern kann. Vor ungefähr einem Jahr haben ein paar Freunde und ich Shigeto im Monarch(en) gesehen. Damals waren wir schon geflasht von Full Circle, seinem ersten (ganzen) Album. Jetzt im Januar ist seine EP Lineage erschienen. Hier beweist er einmal mehr, dass sich seine Fähigkeiten sich nicht nur auf’s Beats basteln und Sounds kreieren beschränken, sondern dass er auch ein unglaublich talentierter Schlagzeuger ist. Könnte toll werden!

Ich bin auch gespannt auf die neue Maps & Atlases.

Kommt am 16./17. April offiziell raus. Ich hab bisher noch keinen Ton gehört. Hier ist ein Song namens Winter, den ihr von der Barsuk-Seite streamen könnt. Mach ich auch gleich. Maps & Atlases spielen am Donnerstag, den 26. April im neuen Bi Nuu (formerly known as Kato).

The Weather Station ist Tamara Lindemann (Lindemann: wie meine erste Klassenlehrerin!) aus Toronto. Letztes Jahr hat sie mit ein paar Freunden eine zerbrechlich schöne, herzerwärmende Folk-Platte aufgenommen, All Of It Was Mine (You’ve Changed Records). Genau das Richtige für genau jetzt, wo Hände und Füsse langsam auftauen, der Atem wieder unsichtbar wird und ein Hauch von Frühling in der Luft liegt.

This list is always late, but maybe that way it gets a little more attention, since by the end of each year you usually drown in best of/worst of lists. The albums below are my 2011’s favorites. Ranking them is a big deal, because I almost equally like all of these bands and artists and their music. Let’s say the ranking refers to how often I’ve been listening to each record (analog and digitally). 

There’s also a row of albums below that list, that I’ve been paying a lot of attention to, and still do! So you should, too!

At the very bottom of this entry you’ll find a few albums that I came across or were introduced to only in 2011. These albums were, however, released earlier.
